The mission of the I Have A Dream Foundation - Los Angeles
is to help
underprivileged children become productive citizens by providing a long-term
program of academic enhancement, mentoring, and cultural enrichment with
an
assured opportunity for higher education.
|
| WHAT
DOES THE I HAVE A DREAM FOUNDATION DO? |
- Adopts an entire grade level of students in an inner city
school in first grade.
- Provides year-round academic enrichment through after
school and summer programs, focusing on literacy and mathematics,
as well as social, cultural and recreational programming.
- Offers mentoring and tutoring by volunteers, computer centers
and psychological services, teen pregnancy and drug prevention
programs and parenting classes for Dreamer parents.
- Prepares Dreamers for college with SAT preparation courses,
college tours and assistance with college and financial aid
applications.
- Provides tuition assistance for the Dreamers that will
attend college or vocational school.
|
| HOW
ARE PROJECTS FUNDED? |
I Have A Dream Foundation - Los Angeles adopts a new class
of Dreamers when funding is secured for the first four
years
of operating
expenses and
for the
promised scholarship funds. Annual funds
sustain the
projects until the Dreamers graduate from high school.
|
| HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? |
The average cost per year is $2,500 per Dreamer.
|
| DO YOU PARTNER WITH OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS? |
Yes. We currently work with the Boys and Girls Clubs,
Girls Inc., The Story Project, USC and UCLA.
|
| WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT I HAVE A DREAM? |
- Our program is effective because our intervention in the
lives of the Dreamers occurs quite early in
their development, is virtually continuous until
they graduate from high school and is extremely comprehensive.
- We assume that every child has potential, and strive
to help each Dreamer become an economically viable
citizen.
- The benefits reach beyond the Dreamers to their siblings,
neighborhoods, parents, their communities and ultimately to
their children, employers and to our society as a whole.
|
| IS
I HAVE A DREAM A NATIONAL PROGRAM? |
Yes! There have been 180 projects in 64 cities nationwide that
have served more than 13,500 students over the past two decades.
Many of these Dreamers were the first in their families to ever
consider, much less attend, college. For more information on
the national I Have A Dream Foundation, go to: www.ihad.org.
