Dream Big STEAM Event at Campbell Hall
Every year, “I Have A Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles (IHADLA) provides Dreamers the opportunity to participate in STEM and STEAM-based learning through our Dream Big event. The event presents a full day of fun-filled and knowledge-based activities that challenges students to think critically and creatively and exposes students to possible college majors and career paths in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
This year’s Dream Big event proved to be an incredible experience for our Dreamers. Hosted by Campbell Hall in Studio City on November 12th, our elementary, middle school and high school Dreamers participated in a variety of exciting hands-on STEAM-based activities led by amazing volunteer teachers from the school. Dreamers had the opportunity to use Campbell Hall’s amazing facilities and a range of equipment that would not normally be accessible at their schools.
Elementary Dreamers collaborated to build and launch a rocket, and they were also able to create their own website; middle school Dreamers learned to make music using an iPad and some wrote a computer code that allowed a robot to move; high school Dreamers were able to build and fly their very own airplane, while others worked together to write, create and produce their own television show!
The Big Dream STEM STEAM based activities included:
Journey to the Moon
Hack the News
Shape Up!
Garage Band
Marshmallow Madness
Just Build It
Chime In!
The Physics of Flight
Robotics
Television Production
Making Ice Cream
Our Dreamers were so enthusiastic about their experience that this is what a few of them had to say:
“I liked that we made our own music and we got to make ice cream while learning the science behind it.” ~ Benjamin Ordoño
“Can we come here next year for a field trip to tour the school? I want a scholarship here!” ~ Julian Perez
“I really enjoyed the field trip! It was a great experience to have seen a different school and do fun activities that I have never done before. I really wish I could be in this school!”~ Jessica Lozano
Events like Dream Big inspire students and open their eyes to possibilities of a better and brighter future.
Our deepest gratitude goes out to Vanessa Frank and Ms. Eileen Powers for coordinating the event with IHADLA, and all the passionate volunteer teachers – Ms. Savage, Mr. Fishman, Ms. Pavel, Mr. Koski, Ms. Pilon, Ms. Whiting, Ms. Ratnavale, Mr. Williams, Mr. Frank and Ms. Dorsey for sharing their time and talents and spending the day to help cultivate our students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics!
