Prom Dress and Accessories Collection
Our prom dress and accessories collection that we did in 2013 was a great success. Thank you very much. We are currently not collecting prom dresses. But please check our website for other ways you can help our “I Have a Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles youth with cash donations, volunteering and mentoring. We currently have a Back to School Supplies Campaign going on.
“Prom Dress Day” will allow Senior Girls from Lincoln & Wilson High Schools to Select from Donated Items on Saturday, April 6th
Los Angeles, CA – March 8, 2013: The “I Have a Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles (IHADLA) helps children from underserved schools in impoverished communities have a better life and get a good education. Today, however, the foundation is taking on a new mission; to help its graduating girls from Lincoln and Wilson High Schools in East Los Angeles prepare for their senior proms. Staff and supporters of IHADLA have taken to Facebook and social media to launch a grass roots effort to collect dresses, accessories, shoes and handbags. Items may be shipped to IHADLA or local pick-up may be arranged with staff and volunteers. On Saturday, April 6, the Dreamers will be able to choose from the donated items during “Prom Dress Day” at El Sereno Middle School. All excess items will be donated to A Place Called Home for its prom dress collection program.
“Our graduating seniors have worked very hard to make it to college and they have so much to be proud of so the last thing we want is to have them stressed out about money for prom attire,” says the executive director of IHADLA. “We came up with the idea during a staff meeting this past week and it has taken off thanks to friends and family sharing it on social media! This is going to be a very special occasion for all of us!”
The college-bound Dreamers were adopted by IHADLA in the first grade. During the foundation’s 15th Annual Dreamer Brunch, held last Sunday at the Skirball Cultural Center, the graduating Dreamer class received a standing ovation while they shared the stage with LL COOL J, who read their college scroll aloud.
ALL ITEMS MUST BE RECEIVED BY FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2013
The “I Have a Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles helps children from underserved schools in impoverished communities have a better life and get a good education. The Foundation sponsors an entire grade at an inner-city, Title 1 elementary school, and stays with those students for over ten years, providing after-school and summer programs, academic and cultural enrichment, counseling services, arts instruction, mentors and tutors. Upon high school graduation, IHADLA then provides each Dreamer a scholarship for college or career training. The Dreamer graduating class of 2010 boasts a 94% high school graduation rate, and 96% of those are now in college or vocational school.
There are three other active IHADLA program sites including third graders in Watts and sixth and seventh graders in Inglewood.
