A Day in STEM at UCLA

Our P20 Dreamer Scholars had an exciting and educational experience during Day in STEM at UCLA, where they got a behind-the-scenes look at careers in medicine and science. The day began with inspiring talks from doctors across various fields, giving students the chance to ask questions and learn firsthand about the path to becoming a medical professional.

The Dreamer Scholars rotated through three hands-on sessions that brought science and medicine to life:

• Rotation 1: Students explored orthopaedics, creating splints, practicing how to screw nails into bones, and even performing ultrasounds on their own fingers to see bones and tendons in action. They also learned about different types of fractures, connecting real science to their everyday lives.

• Rotation 2: Students worked with dental professionals, completing impression models and learning about dental care, anatomy, and the importance of oral health.

• Rotation 3: Students learned about the surgical process, including a video from a doctor’s point of view. They also got a taste of what it’s like in the operating room, donning PPE like masks, shoe covers, and surgical hats to step into the shoes of real healthcare professionals.

The day was an incredible opportunity for our Dreamer Scholars to explore STEM careers, engage in hands-on learning, and see how curiosity, skill, and dedication come together in medicine. Experiences like these inspire our students to dream big and explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
